Spiny Softshell Turtle (Apalone spinifera) Hatchling 3D-printable files

$5.00

This Spiny Softshell Turtle (Apalone spinifera) 3D model is a life-size recreation of a young hatchling, featuring a 5cm carapace length. The digital STL files capture the juvenile’s iconic flat profile and tiny snorkel-like snout. Perfect as an educational centerpiece or a unique collectible, it pairs beautifully with our adult male and female models (sold separately) to showcase the incredible growth and sexual dimorphism of this unique reptile.

How is it different from the adult male or female Spiny Softshell Turtles available on our site? The proportions are adjusted for its tiny size. The head is bigger compared to its body, its eyes are much bigger, its shell is rounder (more dollar-like), and it has a yolk scar (like a bellybutton for turtles).

Description

Spiny Softshell Turtle (Apalone spinifera) Hatchling 3D-printable files

This 3D printable Spiny Softshell Turtle (Apalone spinifera) model is a highly detailed, life-size representation of a newly emerged hatchling. Known for their extreme “pancake-flat” profile and leathery shells, Spiny Softshells are remarkably agile from the moment they break out of their eggs. This model captures the distinct, delicate features of a juvenile turtle, making it an excellent educational piece or a fascinating addition to any herpetology enthusiast’s collection.

Unlike adult females whose shells fade into a mottled pattern, hatchlings boast a striking, vibrant coloration. Their olive-to-light-brown carapaces are sharply ringed with crisp, dark ocelli (spots) and bordered by a clean, yellowish margin. The tiny, sand-grain-sized “spines” along the front edge of their flexible, leathery shell are already perfectly formed at this stage and are captured here with intricate anatomical accuracy.

The 3D printable, digital files are provided in STL format packaged in a .ZIP archive. They are scaled to life-size and are ready for you to print and paint.

The default size of this model has a carapace length of 5cm.

Our tested print settings: Resin

This model is exceptionally well-suited for resin printers due to its small size.

We successfully printed this model in grey resin on an LCD 3D printer using these settings:

  • Layer height: 0.05mm
  • Hollowed: False
  • Angled at 30–45 degrees with the plastron (belly) facing the build plate, supported heavily at the base and lightly on the extremities.

Feel free to use these settings as a guide or use your own preferred settings. They’re just the settings that we used when printing.

Due to the nature of resin printing, you will have to determine your own exposure settings because they are different for every brand of resin and printer.
