Northern Map Turtle (Graptemys geographica) Egg 3D-printable files
Northern Map Turtles (Graptemys geographica) are river-dwelling specialists that leave the water only for high-stakes nesting missions. Between late May and July, females seek out open, sun-drenched beaches or gravelly banks to deposit their future generations. These turtles are remarkably loyal to their nesting grounds, often traveling several kilometers to return to the same sandy stretch year after year.
Unlike the round, ping-pong ball-shaped eggs of snapping turtles, Northern Map Turtle eggs are distinctively elliptical and elongated. A single nest typically contains 10 to 15 of these soft, leathery eggs, though larger females can lay up to 22 in one clutch. These shells are designed to be semi-permeable, allowing the developing embryo to breathe and absorb moisture from the surrounding soil during their 60 to 90-day incubation period.
A fascinating quirk of this species is that the temperature of the nest determines the sex of the hatchlings—warm nests produce females, while cooler ones produce males. Because females can take up to 20 years to reach sexual maturity in northern climates, every successful egg is a critical contribution to the population.

Our tested print settings: Resin
We successfully printed this model in resin on an LCD 3D printer using these settings:
- Oriented tall
- Layer height: 0.05mm
- Hollowed: True
- Wall thickness: 2mm
- Infill: 10%
- 3mm drainage hole on the bottom tip of the egg, slightly off from the centre.
Feel free to use these settings as a guide or use your own preferred settings. They’re just the settings that we used when printing.
Due to the nature of resin printing, you will have to determine your own exposure settings because they are different for every brand of resin and printer.
