Description

Spiny Softshell Turtle (Apalone spinifera) Adult Male 3D-printable files

This 3D printable Spiny Softshell Turtle (Apalone spinifera) model is a highly detailed representation of one of North America’s most unique freshwater reptiles. Known for their pancake-like appearance and leathery shells, Spiny Softshells are built for speed and stealth. This model specifically depicts a mature adult male, which is notably smaller than a female and when painted, has different patterning on its shell.

The Spiny Softshell gets its name from the small, cone-shaped projections (spines) located on the front edge of its carapace. Unlike “hard-shelled” turtles, their shell is covered by a flexible, leathery skin. Males of this species typically retain the vivid, darkly-outlined ocelli (spots) of their juvenile years, whereas females often fade to a mottled camouflage pattern as they age.

The 3D printable, digital files are in STL format packaged in a .ZIP archive. They’re scaled to life-size and ready for you to print and paint them.

This adult male Spiny Softshell file is scaled to have a carapace length of 24.5cm, which is about the maximum for males of this species.
