Eggs
Save your eggs, title and pre-title as a small CSV file, and open it again any time to carry on where you left off. Don't see an egg you want? Ask me to add it.

Key
Names in other languages are given for eggs from countries where the language is spoken. Any egg without one keeps its English name.
Some advanced settings are changed from normal.
Eggs closer together or further apart. Wider spacing leaves less room, so the eggs may be drawn smaller.
The space between the lines of the key.

Printing with a border (Borderless is off in step 2, Design)
Our posters are printed on large sheets and then cut to size. The cut can shift by up to about ½ inch (12 mm), which is a limitation of our printers. With a border, that shift can make the white margin and the frame line noticeably uneven, wider on one side than the other.
We recommend borderless for printed posters. Borderless prints look the same, without the outer margin and line, so a small shift isn't noticeable.
Uneven border edges caused by cutting aren't a printing fault, so they aren't covered for a reprint or refund.

Use your posters any way you like, as long as the footer stays exactly as it is. The egg files are yours to print and sell too, with credit ().

Where the ready-made sets come from
Each ready-made set is a starting point for your own poster. Most come from published breeding records: a park's breeding bird atlas, checklist or survey, keeping only species with real nesting evidence. Sets marked Selected by SaviMade are our own choice of birds, not a list from a published source.
Records are never complete, some sources are decades old, and birds come and go, so a set may miss a species or include one that no longer nests there. Please check it against your own knowledge or a local checklist, and add or remove eggs as you like. Each egg's size, shape and colours have their own sources, listed on the egg pages.
About the Egg Collection Poster app
Make your own poster of eggs at true relative size, in three steps:
- Choose eggs. Start from a ready-made set (a park, region or theme; search by place or by a bird in it), or pick eggs one by one. Search by common or scientific name, narrow the list by group or by a country they breed in, and combine them (for example hummingbirds that breed in Costa Rica); Select all shown adds every egg in the list. With eggs already chosen, + Add beside a set adds its eggs to yours, so you can combine sets (for example Part 1 and Part 2 of a park). The sets are starting points based on our research: Where these come from lists each set's sources, so check a set and add or remove eggs as you like.
- Design. Title and pre-title; paper size (Automatic picks the smallest standard size that fits the eggs well, from 8.5 × 11 to 24 × 36 in); layout (Rows, Clustered or Title in the middle); Life size; Mounting sheet mode; Borderless; what the key shows with each name (its scientific name, the default; its length and width; or both, with the measurements underneath) and its text size; colours (ready-made palettes or your own); and, under Advanced settings, the spacing between eggs and between the key's lines. Without Life size the eggs are shown as large as fits: up to twice life size on Automatic, and up to eight times life size on a paper size you choose (a few eggs on a big poster). The scale is printed under the title.
- Get it. Order a Printed poster, or choose Download only: tick the illustrated poster (coloured eggs), the silhouette poster (as in the Design preview) and the 3D-printable egg files, and pay once for everything you tick. On this step the preview shows the illustrated poster.
My list. Saves your eggs, title and pre-title as a small CSV file on your device; open it later to pick up where
you left off, or share it. The file is a plain spreadsheet (one egg per row), so you can also make or edit a list in a
spreadsheet program: a species column with the egg names is all it needs.
Mounting sheet mode. Turn this on (Design step) to make a sheet for displaying real 3D-printed eggs. Every egg is printed at life size with its number and the key, and the 3D-printable egg files are ticked for you in the style that matches the sheet (you can still untick them if you only want the sheet). Then choose a Mounting style:
- Flattened back (the default). An eighth of each egg's depth is cut off its back, so it keeps most of its shape but sits flat. The egg shapes on the sheet are hidden (they take the background colour); a faint spot the exact size of each egg's flat face shows where to glue it.
- Half egg. Each egg is cut in half along its length. The sheet shows every egg's shape in a colour just off the background, and each half egg is glued straight over its shape.
- On pins. The whole egg, with a 1 mm pin hole modelled in halfway along its length, so the heavier wide end hangs below the pin and the egg stays put. The egg shapes are hidden and a small pin mark shows where each pin goes.
In the two glued styles each egg's number is debossed 0.6 mm into its flat face, so you can match it to the sheet (on the smallest eggs, such as hummingbirds, the digits are made smaller so even a three-digit number fits). To mount: print the sheet at 100% / actual size (check the 5 cm scale bar) and glue it to foam board or stiff card. Glue each egg onto its spot or shape; or, for pins, push a pin through the board from behind at each mark and glue the egg onto its pin. If you'd like faint outlines to line the eggs up with, pick an egg colour under Colours (choosing another colour scheme hides them again). The README in the egg files explains each style.
3D-printable egg files. One STL file per egg, always life size in millimetres (even when the poster isn't), made with the same egg-shape model as the SaviMade Egg Generator, plus a README that matches each file to the numbers on your poster and gives printing tips. With Mounting sheet mode on they're made in the sheet's mounting style; otherwise you can tick Modelled drilled hole for eggs with a pin hole. You're welcome to print, paint, give away and sell the eggs; please credit “Egg geometry created with the Savi Made Egg Generator (savimade.ca)” whenever you show or sell them publicly.
Egg shapes. Each outline is drawn with the same egg-shape model as the SaviMade Egg Generator, set to the species' average length and width and its typical end shape, so the outlines match the 3D-printable eggs exactly.
Egg sizes. Averages of measured eggs from published sources: A. C. Bent's Life Histories of North American Birds and Schönwetter's Handbuch der Oologie for the largest share, then many others (museum catalogues, regional handbooks and journal papers). The poster's footer lists the sources for your eggs (or, when there are many, points to the egg pages, which give every egg's source). In the key, * means the size is approximate (one egg or a rough figure) and † means the species is extinct.
Speculative eggs. For some eggs we haven't found a documented description or measurements yet (usually the information exists and we just haven't found it). Rather than leave them out, we estimate them from their closest relatives (size from measured eggs of the same genus or family, look from a related egg) and mark them in the key: ‡ speculative, drawn from related species; § speculative, and reported as undescribed in a source we checked. Estimates are updated as we find new sources. You can hide speculative eggs from the egg list, and when your poster has any, a note under the list offers to take them off. If you know more about one, please get in touch.
Egg colours and markings (for the illustrated posters) are drawn from published egg descriptions and checked against museum egg photos where we could find them.
Using your poster. Your poster is yours to use however you like: print it, frame it, give it away, share it online, use it in teaching or sell prints of it. Unlike the 3D models in the Savi Made shop, it isn't limited to personal use. The one condition is that the footer text must stay on the poster exactly as it is: readable, and not cropped, covered or edited. It credits the app, the illustrations and the sources of the egg sizes.
Payments and your files. Download only runs separately from the Savi Made shop: payments go straight through Stripe, so they won't appear in your shop account or order history, even when you're signed in. Your posters and egg files are made in your own browser when you click Download, and aren't stored anywhere, so save each file to your device and keep a backup. For 7 days after paying you can download the same poster again in the same browser at no charge, as long as you don't change it (clearing your browsing data ends this early). Stripe emails you a receipt; if a download fails or you lose your files, get in touch with your receipt and I'll help.
Printed posters. Printed poster adds your poster to the shop's cart, printed on matte poster paper by our print partner and shipped to Canada or the US (shipping is added at checkout). The digital files come free with it: your order page and order emails have a Download your digital files button for both posters and the 3D-printable egg files (for a mounting sheet, in its mounting style). Printing is still being tested, so please tell us how it goes.
