Description

Hatchling Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) 3D-printable files

This 3D printable model depicts a juvenile Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) in its earliest life stage, just after hatching. With its rough-textured shell, long tail, and sturdy limbs, it already shows the characteristic features of the species—just in miniature. Even at this age, these turtles are remarkably well-formed and fully independent, heading straight from the nest to nearby water without parental care.

Snapping turtle hatchlings typically have a carapace length of around 3 cm long at hatching and rely on camouflage and caution to survive. They spend much of their early life hidden in shallow, vegetated waters, where they begin to grow into the large, well-armoured adults the species is known for. We’ve scaled these models to have a carapace length of 4.5cm for ease of printing. If you want them to be true hatchling size, you should print them at 66% size.

This juvenile model is a natural complement to our adult snapping turtle STL (see here), which captures the full-grown form of this iconic freshwater reptile.

The files are provided in STL format, scaled to life-size, and packaged in a .zip archive. Once downloaded, they’re ready to print and paint. We provide two different poses of the same model.

Our tested print settings: Resin

We successfully printed the “Pose1” version of this hatchling on a resin-based 3D-printer.

We successfully printed this model in clear resin on an LCD 3D printer using these settings:

  • Layer height: 0.05mm
  • Hollowed: False

We oriented the model such that tail and back of the shell were angled towards the build plate and the head and front claws were away from the build plate.

Feel free to use these settings as a guide or use your own preferred settings. They’re just the settings that we used when printing.

Due to the nature of resin printing, you will have to determine your own exposure settings because they are different for every brand of resin and printer.
