Description

Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) 3D-printable files

The Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) is one of North America’s most highly prized and charismatic freshwater reptiles. Famous for its rugged, deeply grooved shell and surprising intelligence, this semi-aquatic species is a favorite among herpetologists and nature lovers alike.

Our digital 3D model is a life-size, anatomically accurate recreation of an adult Wood Turtle. It captures the incredible complexity of the species’ unique carapace, mimicking the beautiful, wood-carved texture that gives the turtle its name. Every growth ring, leathery skin fold, and scale has been sculpted with meticulous care to provide an exceptional painting experience and a stunning display piece.

Known to many as the “sculpted turtle,” the Wood Turtle’s scientific name Glyptemys insculpta literally translates from Greek and Latin to mean “carved” (glypt) “engraved turtle” (emys insculpta).

Unlike most turtles, Wood Turtles do not shed their scutes annually. Instead, each year of growth leaves behind a permanent concentric ridge. Over time, these stack up into striking, irregular pyramids, giving the carapace a deeply textured, weathered-wood appearance.

Wood Turtles have famously scored as high as rats in classical maze-learning tests. This intelligence is on full display during their famous foraging routine: the “worm stomp.” When searching for food on land, Wood Turtles will rhythmically stomp the ground with their front feet and chest. The resulting vibrations trick earthworms into believing a rainstorm is happening (or that a hungry mole is digging nearby), driving the worms to the surface where they are quickly snapped up.

Wood Turtles are highly terrestrial during the summer, wandering far from their home streams into forests, meadows, and early-successional fields. Because they roam so widely and reproduce slowly, they are incredibly vulnerable to modern threats like roads, agricultural machinery, and poaching. They are currently listed as a species of conservation concern across much of their native range.

Our tested print settings: FDM

We successfully printed this Wood Turtle model in PLA on an FDM printer using these settings:

  • Nozzle size: 0.4mm
  • Layer height: variable
  • Wall thickness: 1.2mm
  • Infill: 8% gyroid
  • Support material: True

We split the model into two halves in our slicer and placed each half with the cut side flat against the build plate.
