Description

Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) Egg 3D-printable files

Common Snapping Turtles (Chelydra serpentina) follow a specific nesting routine that is vital to their life cycle. During late spring and early summer, typically peaking in June, females leave the water to find a spot for their eggs. They look for sandy soil or loose earth in sunny areas like shorelines and road shoulders, where they dig out a flask-shaped nest. While many nests hold between 20 and 40 eggs, larger females can lay as many as 80 to 100 in one go. Once the eggs are buried, the mother returns to the water and provides no further parental care.

The eggs themselves look like small, leathery ping-pong balls. Their flexible shells are important because they allow the developing embryos to pull moisture from the soil. The sex of the hatchlings is decided by the temperature of the nest. Unlike some other reptiles, snapping turtles follow a complex pattern where both very hot and very cold temperatures produce females, while moderate temperatures result in males.

Reaching adulthood takes a long time for these turtles. Females generally don’t reach sexual maturity until they are at least 10 to 12 years old, and in colder northern regions, it can take up to 20 years for them to start nesting. Depending on the weather, the eggs hatch in about 9 to 18 weeks. Most hatchlings head straight for the water, but in some northern areas, they might stay underground and overwinter in the nest until the following spring.

This free 3D printable STL file represents a single snapping turtle egg at life-size scale, measuring approximately 27.5 mm in length. Its smooth, spherical form makes it quick and easy to print, and it works well for educational displays, dioramas, or life cycle demonstrations.

The egg model pairs naturally with our snapping turtle hatchling model, allowing you to create a complete nesting and emergence scene or illustrate the early stages of a snapping turtle’s life history. Used together, the models provide a clearer picture of how these turtles begin life long before they ever reach the water.

The file is provided in STL format and packaged in a .zip archive, ready to print and paint.

Our tested print settings: Resin

We successfully printed this model in resin on an LCD 3D printer using these settings:

  • Layer height: 0.05mm
  • Hollowed: True
    • Wall thickness: 2mm
    • Infill: 10%
    • 3mm drainage hole on the bottom of the egg, slightly off from the centre.

Feel free to use these settings as a guide or use your own preferred settings. They’re just the settings that we used when printing.

Due to the nature of resin printing, you will have to determine your own exposure settings because they are different for every brand of resin and printer.
