Description

Killdeer Egg (Charadrius vociferus) 3D-printable files

Widespread across North America in open fields, gravel lots, and shorelines, Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) are ground-nesting plovers famous for their loud calls and theatrical broken-wing displays used to distract predators. Rather than building elaborate nests, they lay their eggs in shallow ground scrapes lined with small stones. Their pyriform (pear-shaped) eggs feature a distinct pointed end and a buff to creamy background heavily splotched with dark brown or black markings for camouflage against gravel and dirt.

Modeled to 38.0 mm × 27.0 mm at true 1:1 scale using precise shorebird specimen dimensions, this digital model accurately captures the distinctive tapered geometry and smooth contours of a natural Killdeer egg. It is designed specifically for 3D printing to support natural history collections, museum displays, classroom outreach, and painting projects.

The digital STL file is delivered in a downloadable .zip archive. High-resolution SLA or LCD resin printing is recommended to capture the precise, smooth surface geometry without visible layer lines, though FDM printing is also possible using fine layer height settings between 0.1 mm and 0.12 mm with light support under the base.
