3D printable model of Ontario’s only venomous snake!
More details below.
Description
This 3D printable Massasauga Rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus) is a perfect educational tool for outreach activities. The Massasauga Rattlesnake is a troubled species across its southern Ontario range. At best, it is threatened (Great Lakes – St. Lawrence population) and at worst, it is critically endangered and potentially extirpated from its Carolinian forest habitat in southern Ontario.
The Massasauga Rattlesnake is Ontario’s only venomous snake. The biggest threat to their survival is human activity: habitat destruction, and unfortunately, deliberate killings by humans.
The 3D printable, digital files are in STL format. They’re scaled to life-size and ready for you to print and paint them.
This Massasauga Rattlesnake is 74cm long, which is the average size for an adult male.
Our tested print settings
We successfully printed this model in PLA on an FDM printer using these settings:
- Nozzle size: 0.4mm
- Layer height: 0.12
- Wall thickness: 1.2mm
- Infill: 5% lines
- Support material: True
Due to the realistic pose of this model, it requires support material and in our experience, this support material can be difficult to remove at times because of how it tends to wedge in between the coils of the model.
Feel free to use these settings as a guide or use your own preferred settings. They’re just the settings that we used when printing.
