Description

Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) Adult 3D-printable files

The Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) is one of the most iconic fish of the North Atlantic, known for its remarkable life cycle and long migrations between freshwater rivers and the open ocean. Born in streams, young salmon spend their early years in freshwater before undergoing a transformation that allows them to survive in saltwater. As adults, they travel thousands of kilometers through the sea before returning to their natal rivers to spawn.

This model depicts a silver-phase adult salmon in its seafaring stage, when the fish takes on a streamlined, metallic sheen ideal for long-distance ocean travel. At this stage, they are powerful swimmers and efficient predators, feeding on fish and invertebrates in the North Atlantic before their eventual return upriver.

The digital file is provided in STL format and scaled to 2 feet (~61 cm) in length, giving it an impressive presence while remaining manageable for printing.

The files are packaged in a .zip archive. This package includes files for the whole fish as one solid mesh, as well as a version with separate fins to be printed separately and then attached after painting the body (our preferred method for making fish).

Our tested print settings: FDM

We successfully printed this model at 100% scale (2′) as well as at 150% scale (3′). We printed the version with separate fins using these settings for the body:

  • Nozzle size: 0.4mm
  • Layer height: variable
  • Wall thickness: 1.2mm
  • Infill: 10% gyroid
  • Support material: True (only needed for the gill plates)

We had to split the body up into pieces. We oriented the cut surfaces on the build plate.

For the fins, we printed them in clear PLA at 100% infill to get the transparent look. We oriented them so the attachment side was upward at around 45 degrees away from the build plate. You don’t want support scars on the attachment surface because it needs to accurately contour to the body. Support structures are required to print the fins.
