Flapper Skate (Dipturus intermedius) Egg Case 3D-printable files
This 3D printable Flapper Skate (Dipturus intermedius) egg case is an easier to obtain counterpart to a rare object in nature. Flapper Skates and Blue Skates were once lumped together as a single species known as the Common Skate. They have since been separated into two distinct species with the Flapper Skate being the larger of the two and the largest skate species (a relative of rays and sharks) in the world. Flapper Skates are critically endangered due to overfishing and accidental bycatch by humans through certain fishing techniques. They are extirpated across much of their historic range. Flapper Skate egg cases were once a relatively common sight washed up on beaches across their breeding range. They are now a rare occurrence that can only be found on as few as a handful of beaches near Ireland and Scotland. This 3D-printable counterpart is a wonderful educational tool to bring awareness to a once common and now rare and imperiled skate species.
This 3D printable, digital file is in STL format. It is scaled to life-size and ready for you to print and paint it. This egg case is 20cm long from tip to tip, which is within the normal size range for Flapper Skate egg cases but they can get bigger than this.
The files are packaged in a .zip archive for ease of organization and distribution.
Our recommended print settings: FDM
We have not yet test printed this Flapper Skate egg case model but when we do, we will print it in PLA plastic on an FDM printer using these settings:
- Nozzle size: 0.4mm
- Layer height: 0.12
- Wall thickness: 1.2mm
- Infill: 5% lines
- Support material: True (tree support)
We would orient the model upright. If your slicer supports it, we recommend using a concentric support interface pattern to avoid any unsightly grid patterns where the support material meets the model. We also recommend adding custom support structure to the bottom of the horns to prevent the model from falling over during printing.
