Description
Midland Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta) Egg 3D-printable files
Midland Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta marginata) follow a nesting routine that is typical for small freshwater turtles. From late May through early July, females leave their ponds and wetlands to find sunny spots with loose, sandy soil. They often use road shoulders or embankments, which can lead to long and dangerous journeys away from the water.
Using their hind feet, females dig shallow, flask-shaped nests and lay between 3 and 17 oval eggs. These eggs are elliptical and have leathery shells that absorb moisture from the soil as the embryos grow. The sex of the hatchlings is determined by nest temperature: high heat (above 30°C) produces females, while cooler, moderate temperatures (22–26°C) result in males.
These turtles take a surprisingly long time to grow up. In northern regions like Canada, females don’t reach sexual maturity until they are 12 to 15 years old. Once laid, the eggs hatch in about 2 to 3 months. While some babies head for water in the fall, many in northern populations stay inside the nest all winter. They survive freezing temperatures by “supercooling” their body fluids and finally emerge the following spring to make their first trek to the water.
This free 3D printable STL file represents a single Midland Painted Turtle egg at life-size scale, measuring approximately 30.16 mm in length and 19.05 mm in diameter. Its smooth, elongated form makes it easy to print and suitable for educational displays, dioramas, or life cycle demonstrations.
The file is provided in STL format and packaged in a .zip archive, ready to print and paint.

- Hollowed: True
- Wall thickness: 2mm
- Infill: 10%
- 3mm drainage hole on the bottom tip of the egg, slightly off from the centre.
