Description

Puss Moth Caterpillar (Cerura vinula) 3D-printable files

The Puss Moth Caterpillar (Cerura vinula) is one of the most distinctive moth larvae found in Europe, known for its bold coloration and unusual defensive adaptations. Bright green with striking false eye markings and a bifurcated tail, this caterpillar has evolved a dramatic appearance that helps deter predators long before it ever becomes an adult moth. The oversized eye markings can even give the head a faintly smiley, almost clown-like expression when viewed head-on.

When threatened, Puss Moth caterpillars raise the front of their body, inflate the eye spots on their head, and extend two whip-like filaments from the tail. The caterpillar can also release formic acid, making it both visually and chemically intimidating. Despite this fierce display, the species is harmless to people and spends most of its life feeding quietly on willow, poplar, and related trees.

This 3D printable model captures the caterpillar in its characteristic defensive posture on a twig, highlighting the swollen head, eye markings, segmented body, and extended tail filaments. Surface textures and proportions are designed to closely reflect the real animal, making the model suitable for educational use, display, or naturalist collections focused on insect life cycles and larval diversity.

The digital files are provided in STL format and packaged in a .zip archive, ready to print and paint.

Our tested print settings: Resin

We successfully printed this model on a resin-based LCD 3D printer using these settings:

  • Layer height: 0.05mm
  • Hollowed: False

Feel free to use these settings as a guide or use your own preferred settings. They’re just the settings that we used when printing.

Due to the nature of resin printing, you will have to determine your own exposure settings because they are different for every brand of resin and printer.
