Description
Female Northern Map Turtle (Graptemys geographica)
This 3D printable Northern Map Turtle, scientifically known as Graptemys geographica, is a fascinating species of aquatic turtle native to North America. They are named for the intricate map-like patterns on their shells, which resemble the contour lines of a geographic map. These turtles inhabit freshwater bodies such as rivers, lakes, and streams, where they can be found basking on logs or rocks during the day in the warm months of the year. During the cold months they disappear underwater to hibernate down in the muck. Map turtles are sexually dimorphic in their size. Females, like this model, are significantly larger than males.
Understanding Northern Map Turtles is not only interesting but also crucial for conservation efforts. Like many species, they face threats such as habitat loss, pollution, and illegal collection. By learning about these turtles, we can raise awareness about their importance in their ecosystems and take steps to protect them.
The 3D printable, digital files are in STL format. They’re scaled to life-size and ready for you to print and paint them.
This female northern map turtle has a carapace length of about 24.5cm long by about 16.5cm wide and about 9 cm thick, which is about average for females of this species.
The files are packaged in a .zip archive. This package includes files for an all-in-one version, as well as a print-in-pieces version for ease of printing.
Our tested print settings: FDM
We successfully printed the all-in-one version of this model in PLA on an FDM printer using these settings:
- Nozzle size: 0.4mm
- Layer height: 0.12
- Wall thickness: 1.2mm
- Infill: 5% lines
- Support material: True
We oriented the model such that the tail end of the carapace was facing downward. If your slicer supports it, we recommend using a concentric support interface pattern to avoid any unsightly grid patterns where the support material meets the model.
