Description

Female Red-eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans)

The Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) ranks as one of the most recognizable freshwater turtles, native to the southern United States and northern Mexico. Named for the distinctive red stripe behind each eye, this feature makes them easy to identify. These turtles thrive in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers. They show off their excellent swimming skills and frequently bask on logs or rocks to regulate their body temperature.

Red-Eared Sliders are omnivorous, consuming a diverse diet that includes aquatic vegetation, insects, and small fish. Hatchlings and juveniles focus more on carnivory, while adults transition to a more herbivorous diet with age. Their adaptability in diet and habitat preferences fuels their success across various environments.

Although appealing as pets, Red-Eared Sliders have become a significant ecological problem throughout North America. The popularity of these turtles in the pet trade leads many owners to release them into the wild when they can no longer care for them. These released turtles often outcompete native species for resources and disrupt local ecosystems. They breed prolifically, and their adaptability allows them to thrive in non-native habitats, worsening their impact on indigenous turtle populations and aquatic environments. Consequently, Red-Eared Sliders are now considered the most invasive turtle species globally, found on every continent except Antarctica. This situation underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership and awareness of local wildlife regulations.

You don’t have to worry about this turtle outgrowing its enclosure. This 3D print is far easier to care for than the real thing!

The 3D printable files are in STL format. They’re scaled to life-size and ready for you to print and paint.

This Red-Eared Slider model replicates a large female with a carapace length of about 26 cm, which falls within the size range of adult females of this species.

The files come packaged in a .zip archive. This package includes options for printing the turtle as a single piece, in front and back halves, or with the head and feet printed separately from the body, giving you flexibility in how you choose to print it.
