Description
Northern Brook Lamprey (Ichthyomyzon fossor) 3D-printable files
The Northern Brook Lamprey (Ichthyomyzon fossor) is a fascinating, non-parasitic, jawless fish native to freshwater streams across the Midwest and northeastern United States, as well as parts of Canada. These small, eel-like creatures can reach lengths up to 16 cm and feature elongated, gray-brown bodies and a distinctive, round oral-disc. Unlike their parasitic relatives, Northern Brook Lampreys do not feed as adults. Instead, they rely on nutrients stored during their larval stage, where they feed on detritus and microorganisms while burrowed in fine sediments.
Found typically in clear, coolwater streams, their habitat ranges from the Mississippi drainage basin in Wisconsin to Lake Erie tributaries in New York, and along the northern shores of the Great Lakes in Ontario. Larval lampreys thrive in soft, muddy substrates, while adults prefer swift-moving waters with sandy or gravelly bottoms. They spawn in riffles and crevices, constructing nests from small pebbles.
The Northern Brook Lamprey is classified as a species of Special Concern in Ontario due to habitat degradation and the impact of lampricides used to control invasive Sea Lamprey populations. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining clean, unaltered stream habitats to support their lifecycle.
The 3D printable digital files are available in STL format, scaled to life-size for easy printing and painting. The Northern Brook Lamprey model measures approximately 16 cm in length when straightened out, reflecting the average size of the species.
Moreover, the files are conveniently packaged in a .zip archive for easy organization and distribution.

Our tested print settings: Resin
We successfully printed this model in clear resin on an LCD 3D printer using these settings:
- Layer height: 0.05mm
- Hollowed: False
We used clear resin and painted the model sparingly to maintain some transparency of the finished piece.
Feel free to use these settings as a guide or use your own preferred settings. They’re just the settings that we used when printing.
Due to the nature of resin printing, you will have to determine your own exposure settings because they are different for every brand of resin and printer.
