Description

Túngara frog (Engystomops pustulosus)

The Túngara frog (Engystomops pustulosus) is a small, nocturnal amphibian native to Central America and parts of northern South America. These frogs are best known for their fascinating mating calls, produced by males to attract females. Male túngara frogs gather near temporary pools, inflating their large vocal sacs to broadcast their unique “whine” followed by a series of shorter “chucks.” The complexity of their call plays a crucial role in female mate selection, with females preferring males who add more chucks to their calls.

This 3D printable animal model represents a male Túngara frog in various poses of calling, including just before inflating his vocal sac, and with his vocal sac fully inflated —both of which are common sights during mating season. The model accurately captures the frog’s distinct features: from the wart-covered skin (which once led scientists to mistake them for toads) to the large eyes and characteristic posture.

While not explicitly toad-like, this small species (around 25–35 mm in length) has adapted to survive in various habitats, including forests, savannas, and human-modified areas like ditches and canals. You can now recreate this moment of natural history with a life-sized, 3D printable version of the Túngara frog, perfect for educational use or display.

The 3D printable, digital files are in STL format. They’re scaled to life-size and ready for you to print and paint them. This Túngara frog about 27.5 mm long, which is typical for an adult male of this species.

The files are packaged in a .zip archive for easy distribution. There are versions with throat fully inflated and before full inflation as if the frog is waiting for its next call.

Our tested print settings: Resin

We successfully printed this model in resin on an LCD 3D printer using these settings:

  • Layer height: 0.05mm
  • Hollowed: False

Feel free to use these settings as a guide or use your own preferred settings. They’re just the settings that we used when printing.

Due to the nature of resin printing, you will have to determine your own exposure settings because they are different for every brand of resin and printer.

Project Idea: Miniature Diorama

Add this frog to a miniature diorama with our free 10cm puddle stand file.

Test your creative skills. Print it out, and create a naturalistic display by adding spackling compound, sand, dirt, rocks, sticks, leaves, and more to the stand. To simulate water, we added two part clear epoxy after we painted the stand and glued the frog in place.

Step 1.

Print out the stand, add spackling compound into the recess, and press found natural material into it.

Step 2.

After drying, paint the stand to look like the bottom of a muddle puddle.

Step 3.

Glue the frog into the stand and pour in the thoroughly mixed 2-part epoxy, making sure to  pop any air bubbles with a lighter or mini heat gun.
